A flow process chart and a decision flow chart are both useful tools for analysing and representing the sequence of activities involved in the management of Library and Information Centres. They help library managers understand work procedures, identify delays and unnecessary activities, standardise operations, and improve efficiency. However, the two charts differ in their purpose, structure and method of representing work. In library operations, these techniques can be applied to circulation, acquisition, cataloguing, classification, serial control, reference services and other routine activities. A flow process chart is a graphical representation of the sequence of different activities performed in a work process. It provides a detailed picture of what happens during a particular operation. It generally records activities such as operation, transportation, inspection, delay and storage. In a library, for example, a flow process chart can show the complete sequence through which a newly acquired book passes from the acquisition section to the technical processing section and finally to the shelves. It is therefore particularly concerned with describing the actual movement and activities involved in a process. A decision flow chart, on the other hand, is a diagram that represents a process in which decisions have to be made at different stages. It uses decision points, usually represented by diamond-shaped symbols, from which alternative paths emerge according to whether a particular condition is satisfied. Thus, a decision flow chart does not merely show the sequence of activities; it also shows how the process changes depending on the answer to a question or condition.
