Critical Theory

The relationship between socio-economic structure and the inner lives ofindividuals has been of interest for many writers during the twentieth century.For example, attempts have been made to understand people’s biography inrelation to their social context and vice versa. Freud and his associatesattempted to use insights which they had from an individual’s psychoanalyticalprocess and extended this process to understand the societal processes. Inthe Frankfurt Institute of Social Research the members of the institute wereknown as the critical theorists. They explored the inter-relationships betweenthe material environment of individuals and their cultural life and inner lives.

Structural StrainTheory

Structural straintheorylocates the origins of disorder in the broaderorganization of society. In order to prevent or reducementalillness, societyshould be restructured to reduce levels of stressors or to enhance copingcapacity. Some social structures that cause stress are the effects of poorneighbor hoods on mental health and disaster situations.

Attitudes toward mental illness vary among individuals, families, ethnicities, cultures, and countries.
