Describe the role of models and remote sensing in IPM.

Simplified representation of a system is called a model. Use of models is
considered synon mous to application of systems approach in pest management.
7Agroecosystems are overwhelmingly complex. The ecological processes tying living
and non-living components together are so intricate that these can never be fully
described nor can be fully understood. Simplification is a practical necessity of
analysis.
The models can be qualitative or quantitative:--
 Qualitative Models
These models represent a conceptual relationship between different variables. The
relationship between variables has not been quantified. For example, the cloudy
weather in winters is associated with high aphid population on rapeseed-mustard crop.
Similarly, it is known that heavy rainfall during February or March results in the
reduction in aphid population on mustard crop. Similarly, high population of
coccinellids is observed when there is heavy infestation of aphids on crops. Such
experiences of field workers or farmers, which are not quantified, are called
qualitative models.
