The princely states were a unique and important feature of the political structure of British India. They were territories ruled by Indian princes, kings, nawabs, maharajas, and other hereditary rulers who exercised varying degrees of authority over their domains. Unlike the directly administered British provinces, the princely states were not governed by British officials. Instead, they existed under the doctrine of British paramountcy, which meant that while the rulers retained internal authority, the British Crown exercised ultimate control over matters of defense, foreign affairs, and succession. At the beginning of British expansion in India, many princely states were independent or semi-independent political entities. Through wars, treaties, diplomacy, and alliances, the British East India Company gradually established its dominance over them. The system of subsidiary alliances introduced by Lord Wellesley played a significant role in bringing many states under British influence. Under this arrangement, rulers accepted British troops within their territories and agreed to conduct foreign relations only through the British government. In return, they received protection from external threats and internal rebellions. By the nineteenth century, there were more than 560 princely states spread across the Indian subcontinent. These states varied enormously in size, population, wealth, and political importance. Some states such as Hyderabad, Mysore, Jammu and Kashmir, Baroda, Gwalior, and Travancore were very large and prosperous. Others were tiny principalities consisting of only a few villages. Together, the princely states covered about two-fifths of the territory of India and contained nearly one-fourth of its population.
