Steps in Marital Therapy or Family Counselling

1. Intake: The initial information is gathered and sessions’ plan is briefed.

2. Assessment: assessing the history of the families of origin of both the parents and the family of procreation.

3. Diagnosis. Making a diagnosis based on the assessment and finally on structure and functions.

4. Hypothesis formulation; It is the intervention plan based on the diagnosis.

5. Intervention: Actual counselling using circular question

6. Termination and follow ups.

1. The initial Intake The aim of the intake session is to briefly understand the family’s perception of their problem, their motivation and need to undergo family intervention and the therapist’s assessment of suitability for family therapy.

a. Family Life Cycle  - Family is a small social system made up of individuals related to each other by reason of strong reciprocal affection and loyalties compromising permanent household or cluster of households that persists over year and decades. Member enters through birth, adoption or marriage, and leave only by death. (Berman, 1978).

b. Different Approaches to study a Family (Broaderick, 1971) - Institutional approach, Inter-actional approach, Structural functional approach, Situational approach, Learning approach, Home management approach, Family development approach

c. The Developmental Approach - It emerged out of sociology, child psychology and women development, it focuses on the stages of development as the family moves through its life cycle.
