Mental health services in India is gearing up attention as far as policy and legislative provisions are concerned; however, programatic gaps and slow implementation command strategic actions, which prevent us achieving Universal Health Coverage goals. There exists an opportunity to generate discourse on the integration of innovations to improve mental health services within primary healthcare practices through District Mental Health Programme.

Mental health is now part of comprehensive primary healthcare. It is also anticipated that the community would begin to use the health and wellness centre (HWC) as the first point of contact with the primary health centre (PHC) serving as the first referral point.
