Describe the activities which can be taken up to promote mental health.

Although mental health is a fundamental component of health, recognition of mental disorders and awareness about its importance is limited. Stigma and lack of understanding about mental disorders are major barriers to seeking help and promoting better mental health. Increasing understanding and overcoming stigma through strategic communications and social mobilization are crucial steps towards strengthening mental health programmes.

Mental health promotion involves actions that improve psychological well-being. There are a number of ways to promote mental health, including early childhood interventions; support to children; socio-economic empowerment of women; social support for elderly populations; programmes targeted at vulnerable people; mental health promotional activities in schools; mental health interventions at work; housing policies; violence prevention programmes; and anti-discrimination laws and campaigns. Mental health promotion should be mainstreamed into governmental and nongovernmental policies and programmes. In addition to the health sector, it is essential to involve the education, labour, justice, transport, environment, housing, and welfare sectors.

Promotion of mental health takes place at several levels. Some may be at theindividual level while others may be directed at a particular group of population.For example policies to tax substances like alcohol, cigarettes etc. are directedtowards a population group and intervention like home visiting programs aretargeted at an individual level. Also while somehealth promotion have the primary goal of promoting mental health, others mayhave some different primary goal, but also improve mental health along with it.Activities like support of mothers with mental illness to care for their childrenwould be example of promoting mental health directly whereas activities aimedat reduction of domestic violence, unprotected sex etc. would be examples ofpromoting mental health indirectly, i.e. the primary goal is different, but theseactivities would also be good for the mental wellbeing of a person.

A mental health promotion framework that represents a public health approachto mental illness prevention identifies the following as key social and economicdeterminants of community and individual mental health (Walker et. al, 2005).

1) Social Inclusion: The first determinant is social inclusion. This refers tosocial relationships, involvement in group activities and civic engagement.
