One of the earliest and most significant contributions of science and technology to rural development in India was the Green Revolution. Initiated in the 1960s, it introduced high-yielding varieties of seeds, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and improved irrigation facilities. The Green Revolution transformed India from a food-deficient nation into a food-surplus country. Farmers in states like Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh experienced a significant increase in agricultural productivity, leading to higher rural incomes and reduced dependence on food imports. Alongside the introduction of mechanized tools like tractors, threshers, and harvesters, the revolution also created rural employment in input industries and markets.
