Entrepreneurship in rural areas plays a vital role in promoting economic development, generating employment, and reducing poverty. In India, a large proportion of the population lives in villages where opportunities for wage employment are limited. Therefore, promoting self-employment and small enterprises becomes essential for improving livelihoods and ensuring balanced regional development. The Ministry of Rural Development has introduced several schemes aimed at encouraging entrepreneurship, skill development, and income generation in rural areas. These schemes provide financial assistance, training, infrastructure support, and market linkages to rural entrepreneurs. Among the many initiatives undertaken by the government, four important schemes that significantly contribute to the promotion and development of rural entrepreneurship are Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY), Rural Self Employment Training Institutes (RSETIs), and Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) with its livelihood creation components. Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) is one of the most significant programs launched by the Ministry of Rural Development to promote entrepreneurship and self-employment among the rural poor. The mission focuses on organizing rural households, especially women, into Self Help Groups (SHGs) and providing them access to financial services, training, and livelihood opportunities. Through SHGs, rural people are encouraged to save regularly and obtain credit for starting small businesses such as dairy farming, handicrafts, food processing, tailoring, and other micro enterprises. The scheme emphasizes capacity building, financial inclusion, and enterprise promotion. It also supports skill development and provides revolving funds and community investment funds to SHGs to help them start income-generating activities.
