India has a rich history of environmental movements that have played a crucial role in conserving natural resources and protecting ecosystems. These movements, driven by local communities, activists, and environmentalists, have significantly influenced environmental laws and management policies in the country. Many of these movements have aimed at preventing deforestation, conserving water, protecting wildlife, and addressing pollution.  

### Pre-Independence Environmental Movements  

#### Chipko Movement (1730s, Bishnoi Movement)
One of the earliest recorded environmental movements in India dates back to 1730 in Rajasthan when Amrita Devi and other Bishnoi villagers sacrificed their lives to protect Khejri trees from being cut down by the king’s men. The Bishnoi sect, founded by Guru Jambheshwar, had a deep reverence for nature, and their resistance set an early example of environmental activism.

### Post-Independence Environmental Movements  

#### Chipko Movement (1973)
The modern Chipko Movement, inspired by the Bishnoi sacrifice, was launched in 1973 in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand (then part of Uttar Pradesh). It was led by activists like Sunderlal Bahuguna and Chandi Prasad Bhatt. Villagers, mainly women, embraced trees to prevent them from being cut down by commercial loggers. The movement gained national and international recognition and led to the imposition of a 15-year ban on commercial deforestation in the region. It also contributed to the development of India’s forest conservation policies.

#### Silent Valley Movement (1973-1985)
The Silent Valley Movement was initiated in Kerala to prevent the construction of a hydroelectric dam in the Silent Valley Forest, which is home to rare species like the lion-tailed macaque. Environmentalists, scientists, and local communities strongly opposed the project, arguing that it would destroy a unique ecosystem. The movement was successful, and in 1985, Silent Valley was declared a national park by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
