Social diagnosis is a systematic process in social case work through which the social worker studies and analyses the client’s problems, their causes, contributing factors, and the circumstances surrounding them. It helps the worker understand the nature and seriousness of the client’s difficulties and provides a basis for planning appropriate intervention. The concept was particularly developed by Mary Richmond, who regarded social diagnosis as an essential part of the casework process. In counselling, social diagnosis is important because an individual’s emotional or behavioural problems are often influenced by family relationships, economic conditions, social environment, education, occupation, culture and other life circumstances.
