In the field of linguistics, the notions of "competence" and "performance" were introduced by Noam Chomsky in the 1960s. These concepts distinguish between a speaker’s internal knowledge of a language and their actual use of it in real-life situations.  

Linguistic competence refers to the implicit, subconscious knowledge that a speaker has of the rules of their language, including grammar, syntax, phonology, and semantics. It represents an idealized capacity to produce and understand an infinite number of sentences, even those never encountered before. Competence is stable and is not directly affected by external factors like memory limitations, distractions, or social conditions. It is universal among native speakers and remains relatively constant once a language has been acquired.
