Food and nutrition security refers to a condition in which all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. While food security traditionally emphasizes availability and access to adequate calories, nutrition security goes a step further by ensuring the quality, diversity, and proper utilization of food so that individuals receive essential nutrients such as proteins, vitamins, and minerals. In the context of Social Groups and Family Health, nutrition security is closely linked to well-being, productivity, child growth, maternal health, and the overall development of communities. It is therefore not merely an agricultural or economic issue but a multidimensional public health concern. In India, nutrition security is shaped by a complex interaction of social, economic, cultural, and institutional factors. One of the most important factors is food availability, which depends largely on agricultural production, distribution systems, and supply chains. India has made significant progress in food grain production since the Green Revolution, ensuring a buffer stock and preventing large-scale famines. However, availability alone does not guarantee nutrition security because the production system is heavily skewed toward cereals such as rice and wheat, while pulses, fruits, vegetables, and animal-source foods remain comparatively less accessible for many families. This imbalance contributes to deficiencies of protein and micronutrients, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children, women, and the elderly.
