The theory of continental drift was first proposed in a systematic manner by Alfred Wegener in 1912. According to him, the present-day continents were once part of a single supercontinent called Pangaea, which existed during the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras. Pangaea eventually began to break apart around 200 million years ago, giving rise to the present distribution of continents. Wegener suggested that the continents are not fixed but move horizontally over the Earth’s surface, drifting through the oceanic crust. This idea challenged the prevailing belief that continents and ocean basins were permanent features of the Earth.
