Critically analyse the character-portrayal of Dean Kimathi.

Dedan Kimathi is the main character of The Trial of Dedan Kimathi, whom all of the action either centers on or revolves around. A former teacher, he is a field marshall in the Mau Mau resistance army, which is fighting to force British imperial forces out of Kenya in the 1950s. Kimathi was a real historical figure who remains a Kenyan folk hero to this day. The play shows people during his life discussing various rumors about his mystical abilities and even doubting that he could ever be truly captured. 

The woman is a key figure who represents the strength of all Kenyan women who fought in the Mau Mau resistance struggle. She plays a pivotal role in the attempt to break Kimathi out of prison, baking a gun into a loaf of bread and helping to transport it to him. We see her harassed by a soldier, which gives a clear picture of the day-to-day lives of Kenyans subject to colonial rule.

The boy and the girl are siblings. Their father died, and they were raised by their mother. They have always been poor beggars. Their fight began when one stole some money from the other after they had been paid by a white man. When they first appear, they haven’t seen each other since this happened, but the fight continues nonetheless. The woman soon intervenes and buys them food. When they return with her change, she enlists the boy to take the loaf of bread to another person.

Henderson is the judge in the courtroom and one of the men who tries to convince Kimathi to confess his guilt for his so-called crimes. He is the one who argues the case of “law and order” against Kimathi, and Kimathi always has a clear and succinct rebuttal. Henderson speaks out both sides of his mouth, parroting the cyclical justifications of capitalism and the courts and allowing Kimathi ample room to make his points against them in a way that is impossible to misunderstand.

The play deals with Mau-Mau liberation movement and the people who are a part of the movement. The realistic narrative allows the reader to relate to the characters of woman, girl, boy and Dedan Kimathi. The girl and boy mature in front of the readers and become fellow comrade to the woman; the woman is the motherly figure who guides the younger generation towards a new motive to freedom. The subplot helps contribute to the plot of trial of Dedan Kimathi as these characters are a catalyst to the freedom liberation movement.
