Coral bleaching

Coral bleaching occurs when coral polyps expel algae that live inside their tissues. Normally, coral polyps live in an endosymbiotic relationship with these algae, which are crucial for the health of the coral and the reef. The role of the polyps in the relationship is as follows, most people don't believe that corals are living and therefore don't grow, but this is false. Corals, albeit slowly, can grow between 1-2 inches every year (depending on the conditions) because of the polyps that produce the coral's skeletal structure made of calcium carbonate. The algae's role is that it provides up to 90 percent of the coral's energy. Bleached corals continue to live but begin to starve after bleaching. Some corals recover.
