After independence, India continued to witness several non-violent movements inspired by Gandhian philosophy of satyagraha, civil disobedience, moral persuasion and mass participation. These movements addressed social justice, environmental protection, corruption, displacement, civil rights and democratic accountability. Their outcomes can be assessed in terms of policy changes, social awareness, empowerment of marginalized groups, strengthening of democracy and global influence of non-violent protest traditions. One major outcome was the strengthening of democratic protest culture. In independent India, people increasingly relied on peaceful demonstrations, marches, fasts and sit-ins to express grievances. For example, the Navnirman movement in Gujarat (1974), although involving some violence, began as a mass socio-political agitation against corruption and economic crisis and eventually forced the dissolution of the state legislative assembly and fresh elections. This showed that organized public pressure could hold governments accountable within democratic frameworks.
