# Nature of Social Discrimination during the Colonial Period The colonial period in India witnessed major transformations in social structures, but it also produced new forms of discrimination while strengthening several existing inequalities. British rule did not create the caste system, gender inequality, religious divisions, or social hierarchies in India, as these had deep historical roots. However, colonial institutions, administrative practices, economic policies, and systems of knowledge often reorganised and intensified these inequalities. Social discrimination during this period therefore developed through an interaction between pre-existing social practices and new colonial structures. Caste was one of the most important bases of social discrimination during the colonial period. Indian society already contained complex systems of caste and occupational hierarchy before British rule. Many lower-caste and so-called “untouchable” communities faced restrictions concerning access to temples, wells, schools, public spaces, and social interaction. They were frequently associated with occupations considered ritually impure and were subjected to social exclusion and humiliation. Colonial rule did not simply abolish these practices. Instead, the colonial administration classified and recorded communities through censuses, surveys, legal categories, and administrative documents. The attempt to place diverse and locally changing social groups into fixed caste categories sometimes strengthened the perception of caste as a rigid and permanent social identity. The colonial census played a particularly significant role in the institutionalisation of caste identities. Beginning systematically in the nineteenth century, census officials attempted to classify India's population according to caste, tribe, religion, occupation, and other categories. Communities often sought recognition as belonging to higher social groups, while colonial officials sometimes interpreted social identities through simplified hierarchies. As a result, fluid and regionally diverse identities could become more rigid. Caste associations also became increasingly active in the colonial period, seeking educational opportunities, government employment, political representation, and social recognition. Thus, colonial classification contributed to both the consolidation of caste identities and the emergence of organised movements against caste discrimination. Untouchability represented an extreme form of caste-based discrimination. Communities later referred to as Dalits were often denied equal participation in social and religious life.
