In audio visual production, still photography is an important method of learning how different shot sizes communicate meaning and emotion. To understand the practical use of shot sizes, I selected a friend named Amit as the subject for a series of still photographs. The purpose of this exercise was to capture four different shot sizes—close-up, medium shot, long shot, and extreme long shot—and observe how each frame presents the subject differently. Each shot was taken with careful attention to composition, lighting, framing, and the relationship between the subject and the surrounding environment. For the close-up (CU) shot, the camera frame focused primarily on the face of the subject. Amit was seated near a window so that natural light could illuminate his face evenly. The camera was positioned at eye level to maintain a natural perspective. In this shot, the frame included only the head and part of the shoulders, allowing the viewer to clearly see the subject’s facial expressions. The purpose of a close-up shot is to highlight emotions, reactions, and fine details that might not be visible in wider frames. In this photograph, the subject was asked to maintain a relaxed and natural expression. The resulting image emphasized his eyes, facial features, and expression, creating a sense of intimacy between the viewer and the subject. Close-up shots are widely used in visual storytelling because they allow the audience to connect emotionally with the character. In still photography as well as film production, such shots help convey mood, personality, and subtle emotions. By removing most of the background, the close-up shot directs the viewer’s full attention to the subject’s face. The medium shot (MS) was taken next to show more of the subject’s body while still maintaining focus on the person.
