One recent political advertisement in India that has provoked ethical concerns is the report by India Civil Watch International (ICWI) and Ekō exposing Meta (Facebook/Instagram) approving ads that promote hate speech, disinformation, and incitement of violence, particularly targeting Muslims. ([The Guardian][1]) I will analyse that campaign/ad-system using frameworks of truthfulness, fairness, and social responsibility, and then discuss its potential impact on public opinion, political discourse and democratic values. --- In terms of truthfulness, ethical media demands that political communication avoid falsehoods or deliberate distortion. In the Meta ad case, ads were submitted that contained Islamophobic tropes: portraying Muslims as “instigating communal riots”, “patrons of terror”, or as “invaders” with “erasing Hindus” claims. ([Business & Human Rights Resource Centre][2]) These are disinformation or at least highly charged misrepresentations. They violate the principle of truthful representation because they present false or misleading assertions about a religious community. The ads also used manipulated images, or images designed in a way to provoke emotional fear or hatred, or exaggerated claims of threat. The fact that some of those ads were approved by Meta despite their content suggests a failure in truth‐checking or moderation, which raises ethical alarm.
