A copyeditor and a proofreader are both essential professionals in the publishing process, but their responsibilities, timing, and level of intervention are different. In a publishing house, the copyeditor mainly works on the manuscript to improve its accuracy, clarity, consistency, readability, and conformity with the publisher’s editorial style. The proofreader, on the other hand, works primarily on the typeset or final version of the publication to identify errors that have appeared or remained after editing and typesetting. Thus, copyediting is an editorial activity, while proofreading is largely a quality-control activity performed during the pre-press and final production stages. The copyeditor is usually involved much earlier in the publishing workflow. Once a manuscript has been accepted by the publisher, it is sent for editorial preparation and copyediting. The copyeditor reads the manuscript carefully, often sentence by sentence and paragraph by paragraph. The main objective is to ensure that the text communicates the author’s ideas clearly and accurately. The copyeditor corrects grammatical, spelling, punctuation, syntax, and usage errors. At the same time, the copyeditor checks whether the writing is consistent in tone, terminology, capitalization, spelling conventions, abbreviations, and other stylistic matters.
