Briefly explain components and challenges of urban health care system

The performance of a health care system varies from country to country, andeven within the country, from region to region. This performance influences thehealth indicators. Some of the problems associated with the performances ofhealth sector are described below.

1) Insufficient Allocation of Resources

The percentage of money spend on health care to GDP in developing countriesis low compared to developed countries. Besides, there is also a grossimbalance in spending in different activities, such as expenditure on servicedelivery, salary of the staff, construction of health institutions, etc. A majorshare of health care expenditure goes to the salary component, followed byinfrastructure building, and a meagre amount of money is spend on theprovision of services and capacity-building of health care delivery personnel.Thus, low provision and erratic distribution of health care expenditure is amajor problem of a health care system in many developing countries. Herealso it can be noted that a gigantic share of allocation of resources for healthgoes to rural sector compared to urban sector.

2) Inequity

Inequity is another important feature of health care system in many countries,which are facing problems of inefficiency and ineffectiveness of their healthcare system. Reaching out to the unreached must be the motto of publichealth care services. However, the people living in the rural areas andbelonging to economically weaker sections of society are largely devoid of quality health care facilities. The ‘haves’ in urban areas enjoys the betterhealth care facilities by paying for quality health care service, while the ‘havenot’ residing in the settlements are mostly availing health care services fromthe low grade private practitioners.
