The proton hopping mechanism, commonly known as the Grotthuss mechanism, describes the exceptionally rapid movement of protons through water and other hydrogen-bonded liquids. It was proposed by Theodor von Grotthuss in 1806 to explain the unusually high mobility of hydrogen ions in aqueous solutions. Unlike ordinary ions, which move through solution mainly by physically diffusing from one position to another, a proton can be transferred rapidly from one water molecule to another through successive proton-transfer reactions. Thus, proton conduction in water involves a relay-like process in which the identity of individual water molecules remains largely unchanged while the excess proton is effectively transported through the hydrogen-bond network. In aqueous solution, a proton is not generally present as an isolated H⁺ ion. Because of its extremely small size and high charge density, it interacts strongly with surrounding water molecules. It becomes hydrated and is commonly represented by species such as H₃O⁺, although the actual hydrated proton exists as a dynamic and fluctuating structure involving several water molecules. The simplest representation of proton transfer is H₃O⁺ + H₂O ⇌ H₂O + H₃O⁺. Although the formula appears identical on both sides, the important feature is that the proton originally associated with one water molecule is transferred to another water molecule. Consequently, the positive charge moves through the solution without requiring the same physical molecule to travel over the entire distance.
