The Upper Palaeolithic is marked by technological advances in stone tool manufacture by the production of parallel sided blades which are finished into a variety of tools finished by blunting one side or backing. Blades are flakes, but very refined flat narrow ones, elongated in shape and having parallel sides. For producing blades, the cores are first trimmed all around to remove the roughness. Then, by striking along the circumference of the core, using a punch, a series of blades are removed. That means blades are produced by indirect percussion but not by direct percussion.
