Teaching sentence-based grammar has several limitations, especially when considering language as a dynamic system of communication rather than a set of rigid rules. While sentence-based grammar instruction focuses on individual sentence structures, it often neglects how language functions in real-world communication. This approach emphasizes grammar rules, syntax, and correctness but fails to account for meaning, context, and the way language is used in extended discourse. As a result, students may develop grammatical accuracy without necessarily acquiring communicative competence. Language is not just a collection of isolated sentences but a cohesive system where meaning is shaped by context, coherence, and interaction.  

One major limitation of sentence-based grammar instruction is that it does not fully prepare students for actual language use. In real-life communication, sentences do not exist in isolation; they are part of conversations, texts, and other discourse forms. Teaching grammar at the sentence level may help students construct grammatically correct sentences, but it does not equip them to use those sentences effectively in communication. For example, students may learn how to form complex sentences but struggle with using them appropriately in a paragraph or conversation.
