The manufacturing sector in India plays a pivotal role in the country’s economic development, contributing significantly to employment generation, GDP growth, and industrial diversification. Over the past few decades, India has made considerable strides in developing its manufacturing capabilities, yet challenges such as low productivity, inadequate infrastructure, regulatory bottlenecks, and limited technological innovation have impeded the sector from realizing its full potential. Operations management, which includes designing, controlling, and improving production processes, has a central role in identifying these limitations and implementing solutions that enhance efficiency, quality, and competitiveness. India's manufacturing sector contributes approximately 15-17% to the national GDP, which is relatively low compared to other developing and developed economies like China, where the sector contributes more than 25%. The Indian government, recognizing the strategic importance of manufacturing, has aimed to increase its share in the GDP to 25% through various initiatives including the Make in India campaign and the National Manufacturing Policy (NMP). The NMP aims to create 100 million additional jobs and to increase the sector’s contribution to GDP, while promoting sustainability and inclusiveness. Despite the large workforce and diverse industrial base, the Indian manufacturing sector is predominantly composed of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which account for a major share of employment and production. However, these enterprises often face significant constraints in terms of access to capital, modern technology, quality certifications, and skilled manpower. These challenges directly affect their operational efficiency, productivity, and overall competitiveness in domestic and global markets.
