The National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), also known as Aajeevika, is a flagship program initiated by the Government of India under the Ministry of Rural Development with the primary objective of alleviating rural poverty through sustainable livelihood promotion. Launched in 2011, NRLM seeks to create efficient and sustainable institutional platforms for the rural poor to enhance their access to financial services, skills, and employment opportunities. These SHGs primarily consist of women from marginalized communities, who pool their savings, access credit, and undertake collective economic activities. This approach not only strengthens financial discipline and access to capital among rural poor but also fosters social cohesion and collective decision-making. By empowering women through SHGs, NRLM addresses gender inequity and ensures that women take a leading role in household and community economic decisions.
