The National Family Health Survey in India is one of the most comprehensive large-scale surveys that provides essential information on population, health, nutrition, and family welfare. It is an initiative undertaken by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, with technical assistance from the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) in Mumbai, and supported by several international agencies. The survey has been conducted in multiple rounds since its inception in 1992–93, each round expanding its scope and coverage to provide policymakers, researchers, and development planners with reliable and nationally representative data. The survey is not only important from a demographic standpoint but also plays a critical role in monitoring the progress of health and development indicators in India and in formulating effective health care policies and programs.
