Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) is a participatory approach used to understand the social, economic, cultural and environmental conditions of rural communities by actively involving local people in the process of collecting, analysing and using information about their own lives. It is a method through which community members become active participants rather than passive respondents. PRA is particularly useful in CSR projects and programmes because it helps companies identify genuine community needs, design appropriate interventions, use resources effectively and ensure that development activities have local ownership and long-term sustainability. The basic idea of PRA is that rural people possess valuable knowledge about their resources, problems, institutions, livelihoods and local environment. Instead of depending entirely on external experts to identify problems and prescribe solutions, PRA encourages villagers to analyse their own situation and participate in planning, implementation and evaluation. The external facilitator acts mainly as a catalyst who supports the community in expressing and analysing its knowledge. In CSR projects, PRA can be used before starting an intervention such as a rural health programme, drinking-water project, livelihood-development programme, sanitation campaign, agricultural initiative, education project or women's empowerment programme. For example, if a company intends to construct drinking-water facilities in a village, PRA may reveal that the major problem is not simply the lack of water sources but unequal access, seasonal depletion of groundwater or the long distance women travel to collect water. Such information allows the CSR programme to address the actual community need. One important purpose of PRA is needs identification. Rural communities often have diverse needs, and these may differ from the priorities initially perceived by an organisation. PRA helps identify the problems considered most important by local people. Through discussions and participatory exercises, villagers can rank issues such as unemployment, poor sanitation, inadequate healthcare, lack of irrigation, school dropout or insufficient drinking water. Another purpose is resource identification and assessment. PRA helps identify local natural, physical, human and institutional resources.
