Project appraisal is the systematic process of examining a proposed project to determine its feasibility, viability, relevance, risks and likely outcomes before resources are committed to it. In the context of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Projects and Programmes, project appraisal is particularly important because CSR projects are intended not merely to generate financial returns but also to create measurable social, environmental and community benefits. It helps an organisation decide whether a proposed CSR intervention is appropriate, achievable, sustainable and capable of producing the desired social impact. Appraisal also ensures that CSR funds are used efficiently and that projects are aligned with community needs, organisational objectives and applicable legal and policy requirements. A CSR project may involve education, healthcare, sanitation, livelihood development, skill development, rural development, environmental protection, women’s empowerment or other areas of social welfare. Before selecting such a project, the organisation needs to assess the needs of beneficiaries, available resources, implementation capacity, expected benefits, risks and long-term sustainability. Project appraisal provides a structured basis for making these decisions. The first important technique is technical appraisal. It examines whether the proposed project is technically feasible and whether the organisation has the necessary technology, infrastructure, skills and operational arrangements to implement it. In CSR projects, technical appraisal may consider the availability of trained personnel, appropriate equipment, suitable locations, transportation facilities, communication systems and technological requirements. For example, a rural digital education project should assess electricity availability, internet connectivity, computers, digital content and trained instructors before implementation. Technical appraisal helps identify practical difficulties that could prevent successful project execution. Financial appraisal evaluates the financial requirements and financial viability of a project. Although CSR projects are primarily social in nature, financial resources must be managed efficiently. Financial appraisal estimates the initial investment, recurring expenditure, administrative costs, operational expenses and maintenance costs. It also examines whether the proposed budget is realistic and whether sufficient funds are available throughout the project period. In CSR programmes, financial appraisal ensures that funds are not unnecessarily diverted towards activities that produce limited benefits. It promotes economy, accountability and efficient utilisation of CSR resources.
