Industrial development in India has been a central theme in discussions of economic progress, modernization, and self-reliance. However, despite significant strides since independence, Indian industry has continued to lag behind global standards in terms of competitiveness, innovation, productivity, and export performance. Industrial backwardness in India can be attributed to a variety of historical, structural, institutional, and policy-related factors. Understanding both the causes of industrial backwardness and the developmental role of industry is essential to gain a balanced perspective on India’s development journey. One of the fundamental causes of industrial backwardness in India lies in its colonial legacy. Under British rule, Indian industries were systematically deindustrialized to serve the interests of British manufacturing. Traditional handicrafts and textile industries, once world-renowned, were destroyed through unfair policies and competition from machine-made British goods.
