Ovules are classified into different types mainly on the basis of the position of the micropyle, chalaza and funiculus with respect to the ovular body, and these structural variations are important in understanding seed development and fertilization mechanisms. Orthotropous ovule is the simplest and most primitive type. In this type, the ovule is straight, and the micropyle, nucellus and chalaza lie in a single vertical line.
