Curriculum development is a systematic and continuous process that aims at organizing learning experiences in such a way that learners achieve the desired educational objectives. When a person becomes a member of the Curriculum Development Committee in a subject of his or her expertise, the role becomes highly significant because the committee is responsible for designing a curriculum that is relevant, meaningful, and responsive to the needs of learners as well as society. The committee performs several important tasks in order to develop an effective curriculum. The first task of the Curriculum Development Committee is to analyze the needs and context of education. Before developing any curriculum, the committee carefully studies the needs of learners, the expectations of society, national educational goals, and the changing demands of knowledge and technology. This stage is often called the needs assessment stage. The committee gathers information about the learners’ age, abilities, interests, socio-cultural background, and previous knowledge. It also examines the expectations of parents, employers, and policymakers. Through surveys, consultations, and research studies, the committee identifies the gaps in the existing curriculum and determines what changes are necessary.
