Education and social change are deeply interrelated phenomena, particularly in the context of Indian society, which has undergone vast transformations across centuries due to colonialism, independence, modernization, globalization, and digitalization. Education not only reflects existing social structures and values but also acts as a dynamic force to reshape them. Within the framework of the sociology of education, education is both a product and a producer of social change—it socializes individuals into prevailing norms and also empowers them to question, resist, and reform existing social realities. The Indian context offers a unique case where education has functioned as a tool of social mobility, reform, conflict, and continuity. Historically, education in India was hierarchical and exclusionary, deeply rooted in the caste system. The Brahmanical system of education reserved learning and scriptural knowledge for the upper castes, while denying access to the marginalized, especially Dalits, women, and lower castes. The British colonial regime introduced Western education, which while limited in its reach, unintentionally laid the groundwork for democratizing knowledge. It challenged traditional authority and created new classes such as the English-educated middle class, which later became the torchbearers of social reform and nationalist movements. Education played a pivotal role in catalyzing social reform movements in the 19th and 20th centuries. Social reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Jyotirao Phule, B.R. Ambedkar, and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar understood the transformative power of education and emphasized its necessity in eliminating social evils like sati, untouchability, and gender discrimination.
