Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (FAAS) is a widely used analytical technique in environmental monitoring for the detection and quantification of metal ions in various environmental samples such as water, soil, and air particulates. It is particularly valued for its simplicity, sensitivity, and precision when analyzing trace metals like lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe).

Principle of Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (FAAS):

The principle of FAAS is based on the absorption of radiation by free atoms in the ground state. The core concept revolves around the fact that when a solution containing metal ions is aspirated into a flame, the thermal energy of the flame converts the metal ions into free atoms. These atoms, now in the gaseous state, can absorb light of a specific wavelength that is characteristic of the particular element.

In a typical FAAS setup, a hollow cathode lamp is used as the radiation source. This lamp emits light of a specific wavelength corresponding to the element of interest. As the light passes through the flame containing the atomized sample, a portion of the light is absorbed by the free atoms. The amount of light absorbed is directly proportional to the concentration of the element in the sample.

The key components of FAAS include:

  1. Radiation Source (Hollow Cathode Lamp): Each element has a specific lamp that emits the characteristic wavelength of that element.

  2. Nebulizer and Spray Chamber: These components convert the liquid sample into a fine mist or aerosol for introduction into the flame.
