Heavy metals and toxic chemicals from industrial discharge accumulate in fish tissues, rendering them unsafe for human consumption and affecting the health of both humans and aquatic fauna. Furthermore, sedimentation caused by deforestation, soil erosion, and unplanned urban development reduces the depth and productivity of water bodies, negatively affecting fish breeding and growth. Hydrological alterations, such as the construction of dams, barrages, and irrigation canals, also pose significant challenges to inland fisheries. Dams regulate water flow for irrigation and hydroelectric purposes but disrupt natural river ecosystems and fish migration routes. Many indigenous fish species rely on seasonal floods and riverine connectivity for spawning.
