Over the years, several treatment methods have been developed and applied to minimize the environmental impact of leachate. These treatment approaches can be broadly divided into biological, physico-chemical, and advanced or combined methods. The selection of a suitable treatment technology depends on leachate characteristics such as age, composition, strength of pollutants, and volume, along with economic and site-specific considerations. Biological treatment is one of the most common approaches used to treat leachate with high organic content. Biological processes rely on microorganisms to degrade organic pollutants and convert them into less harmful compounds. There are two broad categories of biological treatment: aerobic and anaerobic. Aerobic treatment methods involve the use of oxygen and aerobic microorganisms to break down organic pollutants.
