Aquatic ecosystems, which include freshwater and marine environments such as rivers, lakes, wetlands, estuaries, and oceans, are among the most vital components of the biosphere. They provide essential ecosystem services, including the regulation of the climate, nutrient cycling, support for biodiversity, and sustenance for human populations through fisheries and freshwater resources. However, these ecosystems face mounting pressures from human activities, such as overfishing, pollution, habitat destruction, invasive species, and the impacts of climate change. In response, several international initiatives have been developed to promote the conservation and sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems. Two significant initiatives in this context are the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), established during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, is a comprehensive international treaty aimed at conserving biological diversity, including that within aquatic ecosystems. The CBD has three primary objectives: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. The CBD recognizes the intrinsic value of aquatic ecosystems and the critical role they play in maintaining global biodiversity. Under the CBD framework, member countries develop National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), which include measures specifically targeting the protection and restoration of aquatic habitats, sustainable fisheries management, pollution control, and the mitigation of invasive species impacts. One of the key contributions of the CBD to aquatic ecosystem conservation is the establishment of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, which were adopted in 2010 with a deadline of 2020. Several of these targets are directly relevant to aquatic ecosystems, including Target 6, which calls for the sustainable management of fisheries, and Target 11, which advocates for the effective conservation of at least 10% of coastal and marine areas.
