Gender-sensitive planning and policy making recognizes that environmental degradation and water scarcity affect women and men differently, often with a disproportionate burden falling on women. Understanding this association is essential for creating equitable and effective environmental and water-related policies. In many parts of the world, especially in rural and semi-urban settings, women are the main users and managers of natural resources, particularly water. They are responsible for fetching water for drinking, cooking, washing, and sanitation. In sub-Saharan Africa and parts of South Asia, women and girls walk several kilometers daily to collect water. This physically taxing and time-consuming task often exposes them to dangers such as physical strain, harassment, and even violence. It also limits their opportunities for education, income-generating activities, and participation in public life. Furthermore, women are disproportionately affected by environmental degradation. Deforestation, desertification, water pollution, and loss of biodiversity directly impact their responsibilities in food production, fuel collection, and water gathering. For example, when forests are depleted, women have to travel farther to collect firewood.
