It refers to the largest yield or harvest of a renewable resource that can be taken indefinitely without depleting the stock or impairing its ability to regenerate. The underlying principle of MSY is to balance the use of resources with their natural capacity for replenishment so that future generations are not deprived of the same opportunities. However, in the era of climate change and resource crises, the traditional understanding of MSY faces serious challenges and requires reinterpretation within the broader framework of sustainability science. This is because the natural systems on which MSY is based are no longer stable, and climate change is altering growth rates, habitats, and regeneration capacities in unpredictable ways. The basic logic of MSY is grounded in ecological models, particularly the logistic growth model. According to this model, a population grows slowly when it is small, then rapidly at intermediate sizes, and finally levels off as it approaches the carrying capacity of the environment. The maximum sustainable yield occurs at the point of greatest population growth rate, which is typically at about half the carrying capacity. Harvesting at this level theoretically allows humans to extract the maximum possible benefit while ensuring the population remains stable. In theory, MSY provides a scientific method to optimize the use of resources without overexploitation.
