Several factors or roles contribute to organizing a text effectively. These include cohesion, coherence, discourse markers, thematic and informational structure, register, genre, and context. Cohesion Cohesion refers to the grammatical and lexical linking within a text or sentence that holds a text together and gives it meaning. Cohesive devices make the relationship between different parts of the text clear. Halliday and Hasan identify five categories of cohesive devices: 1. Reference: It includes the use of pronouns and demonstratives (he, she, it, this, that) to refer to elements within or outside the text. It helps in avoiding repetition and maintaining continuity. 2. Substitution: It replaces one item with another (e.g., “I need a pen. Do you have one?”). This avoids redundancy and keeps the flow of information concise. 3. Ellipsis: This involves the omission of elements that are understood from the context (e.g., “She can play the guitar, and he can \[play the guitar] too”). 4. Conjunction: Words like ‘and’, ‘but’, ‘therefore’, ‘however’ serve as connectors and indicate logical relationships between sentences or clauses. 5. Lexical cohesion: It involves the choice of vocabulary such as repetition, synonyms, antonyms, or collocation to create links between parts of the text. Coherence Coherence refers to the logical connections and overall sense or unity of a text. Unlike cohesion, which is surface-level and language-based, coherence is more abstract and cognitive.
