The sentence "He kept his parents in the dark about his new friends" can be examined and analyzed with reference to the structure of English at multiple levels of linguistic organization—namely, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and idiomatic usage. Understanding the grammatical and syntactical construction of this sentence also requires a look at phrase structure rules, verb complements, and idiomatic expressions within the framework of English grammar. At the surface level, this sentence consists of eight words and conveys a clear idea: the subject (he) deliberately did not inform his parents about his new social circle. However, there is a significant amount of structural and functional complexity in the way the sentence is constructed. --- ### 1. Syntactic Structure The sentence follows a Subject + Verb + Object + Prepositional Phrase structure. * Subject: *He* – a third-person singular pronoun * Verb Phrase: *kept his parents in the dark about his new friends* * Main Verb: *kept* – past tense of "keep" * Object: *his parents* * Complement: *in the dark about his new friends* This is a transitive verb usage, where "kept" takes an object (*his parents*) and a prepositional phrase functioning as an object complement (*in the dark about his new friends*). This complex object complement construction illustrates how English allows embedding within the verb phrase. --- ### 2. Phrase Structure Rules Using phrase structure rules, we can break the sentence into constituent parts: * S → NP VP * NP → Pronoun (He) * VP → V NP PP * V → kept * NP → Det Noun (his parents) * PP → P NP * P → in * NP → the dark about his new friends However, in this case, the prepositional phrase is idiomatic and not to be taken literally. So the structure can ______ _____ ___ ______ ____ __________ ___ ______ ______ ___ ____ ___.
