Socialisation is the lifelong process through which individuals internalise the values, beliefs, norms, and expected behaviours of their society. It enables people to function as members of a social group and shapes their identity and worldview. Gender socialisation, a critical aspect of socialisation, refers to the ways through which individuals learn gender roles and expectations assigned to them by their culture. Two of the most influential agents of socialisation in this regard are the family and the media. Both play a pivotal role in transmitting gender norms and reinforcing societal expectations from an early age. The family is often considered the primary agent of socialisation. From the moment of birth, children are introduced to gender norms within the familial context. Parents and other family members often treat children differently based on their perceived gender, whether consciously or unconsciously. For example, boys may be encouraged to be assertive, strong, and independent, while girls may be praised for being nurturing, gentle, and obedient. These early messages significantly shape children’s understanding of gender identity and influence their behaviours, preferences, and interactions with others. Parental influence begins with the selection of toys, clothes, room décor, and even the kinds of activities children are encouraged to engage in. Research in gender and society has shown that boys are often given construction sets, cars, or action figures, which promote activity, competition, and leadership skills. Girls, in contrast, are often given dolls, kitchen sets, or dress-up toys, which reinforce caregiving, appearance-consciousness, and domesticity.
