The writing process is a systematic approach that helps writers organize their thoughts and ideas to produce coherent and effective pieces of writing. This process consists of several interrelated components—prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Each component contributes uniquely to the overall development of a writer’s skill, and when applied to the context of British Poetry and Drama from the 14th to the 17th centuries, it becomes a valuable tool for both understanding and emulating the rich literary traditions of that period. By examining these stages and exploring strategies to apply them in secondary school education, learners can develop a deeper appreciation for early British literature while simultaneously honing their writing abilities. Prewriting Prewriting is the initial stage of the writing process, where the writer gathers ideas, plans, and organises thoughts before drafting. This phase involves brainstorming, researching, outlining, and identifying the purpose and audience for the writing. In the context of British Poetry and Drama from the 14th to the 17th centuries, prewriting can be used to explore themes, historical contexts, and stylistic features of works by Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, Edmund Spenser, and John Donne, among others. To enhance the writing skills of secondary school learners, teachers can encourage students to examine the themes and social conditions reflected in Chaucer’s *The Canterbury Tales* or the complex characters and dramatic structure of Shakespeare’s plays. For example, before writing an essay on Shakespearean tragedy, students might brainstorm about the moral dilemmas faced by Macbeth or Hamlet and how these reflect Renaissance humanism.
