Health is a multidimensional concept that has evolved over time in response to changes in medical knowledge, social conditions, and public health priorities. Traditionally, health was viewed in a narrow biomedical sense, but contemporary perspectives recognize that health is influenced by a wide range of physical, mental, social, environmental, and even spiritual factors. In the context of Health Care Waste Management, understanding the different definitions of health is essential because improper management of health care waste can adversely affect individuals, communities, and ecosystems, thereby undermining overall health in its broadest sense. One of the earliest and most traditional definitions of health is the biomedical definition. According to this view, health is simply the absence of disease or infirmity. It focuses primarily on the functioning of the human body and considers health as a state in which all biological systems are operating normally. This definition forms the basis of clinical medicine and emphasizes diagnosis, treatment, and cure. However, when applied to Health Care Waste Management, this narrow perspective is insufficient. While the absence of infection among health care workers or patients may indicate health in a biomedical sense, it does not account for environmental contamination or long-term community exposure to hazardous waste. Thus, relying solely on the biomedical model limits the understanding of how mismanaged biomedical waste can indirectly compromise public health. A more comprehensive and widely accepted definition was proposed by the World Health Organization in 1948.
