The National Financial Switch (NFS) and the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) are two of the most significant payment infrastructures in India's financial services sector. They have transformed the country's digital payment ecosystem by enabling secure, fast, reliable, and interoperable electronic transactions. Both systems are managed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which was established in 2008 under the guidance of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Indian Banks' Association (IBA). These payment systems have significantly contributed to financial inclusion, cashless transactions, and efficient financial service management. The National Financial Switch (NFS) is India's largest network of shared Automated Teller Machines (ATMs). It was originally launched by the Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT) in 2004 to connect various bank ATMs into a common network. In 2009, the operations of NFS were transferred to the National Payments Corporation of India, which expanded and modernized the network. Today, NFS connects almost all commercial banks, regional rural banks, cooperative banks, payment banks, and white-label ATM operators across the country. The primary objective of the National Financial Switch is to enable customers of one bank to use the ATM services of another bank without any difficulty. Before the introduction of NFS, banks operated independent ATM networks, limiting customer convenience. NFS introduced interoperability, allowing customers to access cash withdrawal, balance enquiry, mini statements, PIN change, fund transfer, and other ATM services from any connected ATM regardless of the issuing bank. The architecture of NFS consists of participating banks, ATM operators, switching centers, communication networks, and settlement systems. When a customer inserts a debit card into an ATM, the ATM sends the transaction request through the NFS switch.
