Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) is a methodology that allows local people to share, analyze, and enhance their knowledge of life and conditions, in order to plan and act. From a gender analysis perspective, PRA becomes a powerful tool to highlight differences in roles, responsibilities, needs, and access to resources between men and women in rural communities. It promotes inclusive planning by actively involving women, often marginalized in decision-making processes, in the analysis and planning stages of rural development. Gender analysis using PRA tools ensures that development planning does not treat the rural population as a homogeneous group. Instead, it identifies the specific challenges and opportunities faced by women and men separately, thus contributing to gender-equitable outcomes. The following are the major tools and techniques used in PRA, explained through a gender lens: 1. Social and Resource Mapping Social and resource mapping helps communities draw maps of their villages to identify households, natural resources, infrastructure, and institutions. From a gender analysis point of view, this tool helps in understanding spatial distribution and resource access differences between men and women. When both genders participate in creating maps, it brings out how men and women perceive the space differently. For instance, while men may focus on markets or roads, women may highlight water sources, fuelwood areas, schools, or health centers. Mapping also reveals mobility constraints faced by women due to social norms and safety concerns. 2. Daily Activity Schedule (Time-use analysis) This technique records how men and women spend their time throughout a typical day, including productive, reproductive, and leisure activities. It highlights the gendered division of labor, showing the double or triple burden on women due to their responsibility for domestic chores, agricultural work, and caregiving roles.
