Auguste Comte (1798–1857) is regarded as the father of sociology because he was the first thinker to establish sociology as a distinct scientific discipline. He believed that society could be studied using the same scientific methods employed in the natural sciences. His ideas laid the intellectual foundation for the development of sociology and strongly influenced later sociological thought. The most significant contribution of Comte is the philosophy of Positivism. Positivism holds that genuine knowledge is based on observation, experimentation, comparison, and the scientific study of facts rather than speculation, theology, or metaphysics. According to Comte, social phenomena follow natural laws just as physical phenomena do. Therefore, society can be studied objectively, and scientific knowledge can help solve social problems and promote human progress. Comte's Law of Three Stages is another central idea. He argued that both human thought and society evolve through three successive stages of intellectual development.
