Self-concept begins to take shape in early childhood as children recognize themselves as distinct individuals with particular traits, abilities and preferences. Young children often describe themselves in concrete, physical terms, emphasizing observable features or simple competencies. With cognitive maturation and social comparison, especially during middle childhood, their self-descriptions become more abstract, balanced and realistic. They begin to assess themselves based on internal states such as emotions, attitudes and personality traits, and they incorporate feedback from significant others. Through these processes, self-esteem also evolves, shaped by children’s perceptions of their successes and failures and by how they believe others judge them. A positive self-concept encourages confidence and motivation, while a negative one may lead to withdrawal or maladjustment. Peer relationships play a complementary and equally vital role in social development. Early peer interactions are primarily based on play, imitation and shared activities, but as children grow, their peer networks become more complex, stable and selective. Friendships in middle childhood involve trust, mutual understanding, and shared values. These relationships provide opportunities to learn cooperation, conflict resolution, empathy and perspective-taking. Peer acceptance serves as an important indicator of social competence; children who are accepted tend to develop better emotional adjustment, whereas those who face rejection may struggle with loneliness, low self-esteem or behavioural problems.
