Handicrafts occupy a significant place in the cultural, social, and economic life of Bharat. They represent centuries-old traditions, indigenous knowledge systems, artistic excellence, and the creativity of artisan communities spread across different regions of the country. The sector provides employment to millions of artisans, many of whom belong to rural, tribal, and economically weaker sections. Apart from preserving cultural heritage, handicrafts contribute substantially to exports, tourism, and rural development. Recognizing the importance of this sector, the Government of Bharat has launched several initiatives aimed at preserving traditional crafts, improving artisan livelihoods, enhancing market access, strengthening infrastructure, and promoting innovation while maintaining the authenticity of traditional craftsmanship. One of the most significant initiatives is the National Handicrafts Development Programme (NHDP). It serves as an umbrella scheme for the integrated development of the handicrafts sector. The programme focuses on skill upgradation, design development, technology support, marketing assistance, infrastructure creation, and welfare measures for artisans. It seeks to enhance the competitiveness of handicraft products in both domestic and international markets while ensuring sustainable livelihoods for craftspersons. The Comprehensive Handicrafts Cluster Development Scheme (CHCDS) has been introduced to strengthen handicraft clusters across the country. A cluster approach enables artisans working in a particular craft or geographical area to benefit from common facilities, shared infrastructure, collective marketing, and better access to raw materials.
